The rain that started late yesterday afternoon continued through the night and much of the day has been a welcome relief to our very dry summer. My rain gauge showed 0.09″ of rain by this morning, so it isn’t exactly a real rainfall, but it was enough so that Leigh couldn’t paint decks today, but she was able to work in my garage painting a cabinet, helping me organize materials, etc., and she was also able to paint some of the soffits, so it was a productive day. My friend Lydia asked me to edit one of her stories and that was great fun! She is a wonderful writer and I am glad she asked me. I have never done anything like this before, so I don’t know how helpful I will be, but it seems a very fun thing to be a part of. I also read more of Mary Oliver’s A Poetry Handbook, which I am really enjoying. And I’ve started reading The Norton Anthology of Poetry from the beginning (“Caedmon’s Song” and “Beowulf,” etc.). I know I have a PhD in English, but I’ve never done much with poetry before and I’m finding that now I am truly both ready for it and enjoying it. It is another part of my journey, and one which I think will prove to be a lot of fun.

learning the truth
that the closing of a door
leads to another opening
gentle rains overnight
and throughout the day
