I finished up for the week at Student Link by helping a student, marking papers, cataloguing a book, giving a test, and trying to find alternative texts for Algebra 2. Otherwise, my day was spent writing (of course, that’s what November is all about!). I got up again at 6:30 AM and had 2236 words down before I left for Student Link. Then I wrote another 1914 when I came home for a total of 4150 words and two chapters today. My overall total is now 28,462 words which is over half way! A friend asked me how I did it so fast and I think for me the secret to success is to live and breathe my novel all the time. I started thinking about it last March and kept getting more ideas right up until November 1st. I then just start in and never look back. I try to figure out each night what the next chapter or two will be, but I am also very open to my characters telling me something else. Today’s session was a case in point where the chapters went differently from what I’d originally thought, but ideas just kept coming to me as I typed. The other key for me is that I never look back. I haven’t re-read a single word that I’ve written and I won’t until I am done. I’m just trying to tell my story. Once the first draft is done, then I’ll go back and edit and refine, find the places where characters were inconsistent, etc. But for now, I just want to capture the story my characters are sharing. It was pouring rain for much of today, so it was lovely to spend the afternoon inside writing, then reading, getting a brief nap, tutoring one student, and now heading to the sauna and hot tub. Another day, another two chapters.
